Making Scents of the Torah
The Torah refers to perfumes and fragrance 58 times, including a recipe for ketoret in the book of Exodus, which comes with an admonition from G-d never to smell it on pain of excommunication. We will discuss and smell the 26 natural ingredients mentioned in the Hebrew Bible--things like Hyssop, Cistus, and Spikenard--and learn about the plants, where they grow, how they were used over the millennia not just for fragrance but for their pharmacological constituents. We'll see how essential oils are distilled from plant resins. No ketoret will be made.
