A Wordless Leonard Cohen Songbook
Leonard Cohen is a dominant face and voice in our culture, his music a mainstay for younger musicians. But Cohen’s career has transformed over time, through poetry and prose to folk, country and pop music. In his soon to appear Wordless Leonard Cohen Songbook, Toronto wood engraver George A. Walker has fashioned 80 wood cut images telling Cohen’s life from his Westmount youth through his recent musical celebrity. Walker reworks iconic images of Cohen, as well as those that are less well known. My introduction for Walker’s Songbook will anchor my presentation of his images, which screen like a black and white silent film. Making use of the images, my contribution to the book, and a more general discussion of Cohen, this presentation will allow us to see Cohen with new eyes.
