History Not Written by the Victors: Unearthing the First Battle of the Jewish War
The first century C.E. Jewish War against the Romans is famous for its climax (destruction of the Second Temple) and its denouement (Masada). The story rarely heard involves its preamble, the overlooked site of Yodefat. It is behind the walls of this Galilean town that Jewish residents and refugees held off Vespasian’s heavily-armed Roman legions for weeks. But even the detailed chronicles of Josephus, the most famous man captured at the scene, could not prepare our team of archaeologists for the discoveries that lay undisturbed in the ostensibly bare hilltop for almost two millennia.
