Organ and Tissue Donation: Ethics and other Issues from a Jewish Perspective
Some of the Jewish ethical principles supporting organ donation include : saving a life;honoring the dead; compassion; and not standing idly by. There are counter-concerns about the determination of the time of death, the criteria for death and desecration of the body and of Shabbat. There remains a great deal of "mythology' in the Jewish community about the religious acceptability of donation, but not about receiving an organ. We will attempt to clarify the issues at stake , considering the lack of adequate donors in Canada.
